RECENT NEWS ABOUT MARKET COMMON, MYRTLE BEACH

The Market Common is the keystone of one of the most pivotal developments in Myrtle Beach's history.

The groundbreaking in October, 2006, was also a relief and a bit of closure for those involved in the 13-year process. They had witnessed several false starts since the Air Force packed up and left the base in 1993 including failed proposals for an arena and a theme park. The project has come together bit by bit, revealing a vast complex of housing, recreation, business and retail.

Developers hailed The Market Common as the coming of the new downtown and heart of Myrtle Beach, while politicians marveled at the way the south end was growing up.

"I was awake all night long, because it is at least one of probably the top three most exciting things I've ever been involved in in my life. There were times I think when all of us weren't sure that it was going to happen." - Buddy Styers, executive director of the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base Redevelopment Authority since 1995

"You've had a ton of carrots thrown at you and never seemed to quite get a hold of one, because all the people that came forward and made promises obviously were jokes. But you finally caught the carrot." - Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes to Buddy Styers

"When you make promises in the South, if your word is no good you're not too good yourself and we don't need you around. So I know that all the promises made for this project and what it is going to produce will be lived up to." - Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes to McCaffery Interests

"Projects like these are not for instant gratification. Projects like these are for the ages. ... We'll see you in two years when we open, and we'll see you in five years when this place becomes the downtown of Myrtle Beach." - Luis Medeiros, managing director of Leucadia International Corp.

"We've got 60 million baby boomers in the United States of America that are marching their way toward retirement and disproportionately gonna come to our neck of the woods here along the coast of South Carolina. I think what this represents is a chance to be proactive." - Gov. Mark Sanford

"It was very difficult to plan that far ahead because you have to allow for that component in your development plan, but for a project that you really believe in it's worth the commitment and the trust." - Jack Divine, Divine Dining, about the restaurant he plans to open there in 2008.

The Market Common is the biggest real estate development project in SC. This is the first introduction of New Urbanism to the Grand Strand. The Market Common is completely transforming the old Air Force Base in the heart of Myrtle Beach into a city center by the sea. Some of the businesses that will be coming are: Barnes and Noble, Williams Sonoma, PF Chang’s Bistro, Tommy Bahama Store and Cafe, Pottery Barn, and Banana Republic. The idea is that visitors and residents will never need to leave– there is office space, live/work town homes, grocery store, loads of recreational activities on-site and the beach within an easy bike ride.

Real Estate News for Market Common Myrtle Beach

Less than one mile from the ocean, The Market Common is unlike anything in the Myrtle Beach area. The new community will create a downtown-like atmosphere with national retailers along-side local businesses. Townhomes, developed by Dock Street Communities, along side The Market Common, and apartments above the retail space will allow home owners to walk out their doors and explore the urban village. Residents will enjoy the convenience of a major grocer, movie complex, restaurants, salon and spa, health center and retail stores all at their fingertips.

In addition, the city of Myrtle Beach has transformed the former Air Force Base into a beautiful landscape that calls you to stop and stroll through the parks, around the ponds and to play on the ball fields. It is quickly becoming a center for adult and children's community softball and baseball teams, as well as a sporting venue for everything from outdoor hockey to lacrosse, soccer and football.
